in the topic Singham Movie Review in the forum Audio / Videos / Movies
Yet another remake hits Hindi screens and tries its hand with lady luck. This time it is hit combo Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn in the action avatar, Singham. But it’s not the fact of being a remake that sets a film a part or be detrimental to any film. In the scheme of the things, the audience has somewhat gotten used to every third film falling into one of the categories remake, sequel or second episode. The challenge is making it enjoyable for even the select section of the audience that has seen the original, no matter the language or the period. For this hit jodi, the need to go a step forward and bring out something bigger and better than the Tamil Blockbuster starring Suriya Sivakumar and Sweety [Anushka] Shetty, is far greater with the memory Ghajini so strong even now. Considering the statement made by director Rohit Shetty that their version will be fierier in the action, the confidence the makers displayed added to the expectations.
Yet, is confidence enough to win over the audience. After all, the story of an upright police officer becoming the thorn in the eye for a powerful criminal and their showdown isn’t exactly pioneer story-telling. With that said, this isn’t just about an honest cop. Its about a small town Shivgad’s sub-inspector, Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn), fierceful yet faithful to his roots, his family and his town. For him, criminals like Jaikant Shikhre (Prakash Raj) are unheard of. But when the Goan Kingpin tries to pull a fast one over the sub-inspector, Singham sets him straight and unknowingly gets on his bad side by hurting Shikhre’s ego. Do what you will but hurting Jaikant Shikhre’s ego is a no no with dire consequences. What happens when Singham gets transferred from his hometown to big city Goa, the kingdom that Shikhre has ruled with his smuggling, extortion and drug trafficking for so long forms the crux.
It has been a while since seeing Ajay Devgn in an action based masala flick and he tries his best to deliver however, doesn’t quite make it. On one side the action is powerful, but when it comes to the emotive side, a normally free-flowing Ajay seems a little stiff. But he does well regardless. However, with a villain like Prakash Raj in front of you, it is tough to stand out. Prakash seriously goes to town in this film and what’s more he maintains his sinister side while appealing to the audience with his quirky lines. Debuting in Hindi as Ajay’s ladylove is Kajal Agarwal who looks pretty but is not only disappointing in her portrayal but the character itself is weak, a stark difference from the original in Tamil. In fact the whole ‘love story’ lacked any connection to the story and remained just as an extra fitting that took up time. Govind Namdev, Sudanshu Pandey and Sonali Kulkarni work effectively and play their parts. The rest are ok.

On the technicals side of things, Amar Mohile’s background helps the proceedings by giving the much needed punch. Camera work by Dudley is nice and editing by Steven Bernard could have been crisper. Music Ajay-Atul worked well for the title track but the rest don’t mesh well with the screenplay. Rohit Shetty has designed some eye-popping action for the film, making it a tough challenge for Jai Singh to execute, but it works nonetheless.

While the dialogue by Farhad-Sajid is phenomenal is most situations, there are some that lack the punch they require. Screenplay writer Yunus Sajawal has made his intentions clear in the beginning itself, so it would be futile to think otherwise. But you can’t help but think the slow-motion button was permanently stuck on for a good portion of the second half. After delivering a exhilarating first half, this becomes a damp squib only revived by Prakash’s presence on screen. Even with all the masalafied drama inserted for the masses, the intensity dwindles because of it too.

So while Singham does roar his loudest, it doesn’t always frighten.

in the topic More on Mausam! in the forum Bollywood News

Eros International and Vistar Religare’s much awaited film Mausam was directed by dynamic Pankaj Kapoor and stars the first time jodi of Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. In a recent interview Shahid revealed a bit of the timeless love story, “Mausam is about seasons of love. It is about the different emotions and situations that the two principal characters – Harinder Singh (Shahid) and Aayat (Sonam Kapoor)- undergo… what seasons of love they go is the theme of the film.”

Shahid added, “It is a film that is very close to my heart.” Especially since this is the first time he has worked with his father Pankaj as director. “It is a film we have made as a family together.”

An interesting fact is that the film was written with Shahid in mind. Director Pankaj says, “I had other scripts and we wondered whether Shahid could be part of them or a fresh script should be written for him? We decided to write a fresh script and that’s how the birth of Mausam took place.”

About the story and treatment of the Mausam he says, “It has its own comment to make. Though the endeavour is to make an entertaining film, which reaches to almost everyone and yet have a certain level of presentation that appeals to one and all.”

Sonam is sure audiences are going to enjoy the film, “This film is a labour of love. I am grateful to Pankaj sir and Shahid to have given me the chance to be a part of this film. We all have worked enormously hard and given it a lot of time and attention. This love story has been an overall different trip for us and I am sure the cine-goers will like Mausam.”

Mausam releases in cinemas worldwide on 16th September.

We have some exclusive stills just for you!

in the topic Bodyguard trailer launch in the forum Bollywood News

Last week saw the trailer launch of Salman Khan Starrer ‘Bodyguard’ at a suburban multiplex in Mumbai. Launched in an innovative marketing gimmick by Salman’s real-life bodyguard of 15 years Shera, the evening was full of laugher and witty talk on the three Khans’, Katrina, Kareena and Bodyguard.

A very humbled and emotional Shera confessed that it was the biggest honor Salman had given him to unveil the film’s trailer. “For the past 15 years I have been telling bhai (Salman) that I would take a bullet for him. But the truth is that Salman can do anything for his loved ones. He is the real life bodyguard”

Talking about Shera, Salman stated “I can trust him completely. I can trust him with my money, women, family, life, before having alcohol and after having alcohol. He is completely trustworthy”, eventually joking that he hoped Shera never penned a book on him.

Kareena added “Shera has known me since I was 10-years-old. He has known me before I was an actress so it is a very special moment. Today he is launching the promo of one of my films”

Cleverly dodging questions on Shahrukh’s Dabangg performance at the recently held IIFA, Salman cheekily passed the mike towards Kareena stating that she would know better as she was close to SRK. He also went on to confirm that Katrina would be doing a bit of the title song.

Starring Salman and Kareena in leading roles, the film is a remake of 2010 Malayalam film ‘Bodyguard’ which was subsequently also remade in Tamil and is currently being filmed in Telugu. Both Tamil and Malayalam versions were directed by the same filmmaker Siddique and turned out to be box office super hits. In the film, Salman sports the uniform of his personal bodyguard’s brand. Reportedly, Salman refused a 7-crore offer by other security company’s being adamant that he would only endorse Shera’s company.

Keeping the tradition of Eid festival releases intact since the past two years with Wanted in 2009 and Dabangg in 2010, Bodyguard will also hit the theatres for Eid on August 31.

Bodyguard is the third film to bring together the charismatic duo of Salman and Kareena. Though their earlier two releases – Kyon Ki and Main Aur Mrs Khanna did not perform at the box office, fans will be hoping the pair gets third time lucky this time around.

Time Magazine is once again holding a poll with nominees for the Time 100, which is a list of the most influential people in the world. Encompassing people from all walks of life and countries the poll asks you to “Cast your votes for the leaders, artists, innovators, icons and heroes that you think are the most influential people in the world. The winner will be included in the TIME 100.”

One of Hindi cinemas own, Aamir Khan, has been included in the list of 204 nominees on the poll. His entry reads, “Aamir Khan started out in Bollywood as a handsome, likable star from a family of film producers. While still at the peak of his career as an actor, he has successfully reinvented himself as a producer, encouraging out-of-the-box movies. In 2009, he starred in and co-produced Bollywood's biggest-ever commercial hit, 3 Idiots, and last year he produced the critically acclaimed Peepli Live, a satire on farmer suicides that made a profit without any top stars.”
